The relationships with conference participants assisted the students in determining their specific areas of interest in this broad field and created colleagues for future interactions and potential collaborations. The NSF supported students presented their posters and participated in the conference poster award competition. Participating students were exposed to a unique intellectual environment including technical presentations by leading international experts in the PM and AM fields and interactions with researchers from around the world. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this Report are those of the PI and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation NSF has not approved or endorsed its content.Ĥ0 students received this NSF conference grant attended the PowderMet2021/AMPM2021/Tungsten2021 in WDW Swan and Dolphin, Orlando, Florida, June 20-23, 2021.Ī wide range of topics were covered that includes powder additions and removal, MIM, powder recycling, equipment for AM, medical applications for powder metallurgy etc., which stimulated learning and training. This Project Outcomes Report for the General Public is displayed verbatim as submitted by the Principal Investigator (PI) for this award. These opportunities will not only improve the participants' knowledge in the field but also develop scientists and engineers who are ideally suited to craft the next generation of designs in powder metallurgy that will push the nation's manufacturing capabilities. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria. In addition to nurturing a global powder metallurgy (traditional press & sinter, metal injection molding, isostatic pressing, and metal additive manufacturing) vision, participants will learn the latest research areas and results in the fields of interest. This project provides the student participants with opportunities to exchange ideas with leading researchers and engineers from worldwide industrial and governmental facilities, as well as with students and faculty from both domestic and international universities. The workforce needs of powder metallurgy have not been met for decades with a workforce that will see large retirements in the next few years, recruitment of current graduate students is essential for this industry. Powder metallurgy is a topic with applications in literally every portion of the manufacturing sector in the American economy, and therefore directly impacts economic welfare and national security in the short term by promulgating information, but in the long term by recruiting high-quality engineers and scientists into this field. In addition to nurturing a powder metallurgy community, participants will learn the latest research areas and results in powder metallurgy. The award provides student participants with opportunities to exchange ideas with leading researchers and engineers from worldwide industrial and governmental facilities, as well as with students and faculty from both domestic and international schools. This premier powder metallurgy conference acts as a bridge between industries, government laboratories, and academic institutions. This award supports 35 graduate and undergraduate students studying at US institutions to participate in the World PM 2020 conference sponsored by the Metal Powder Industries Federation.
